My Journey to Non-Toxic Living

When the Pediatrician Recommends you to make an INFORMED Decision

I’m sitting in the pediatrician’s office with my 2-day old newborn for his first check up. The nurse practitioner comes in and asks if we’ll be doing all the vaccines; I said I don’t know, I have questions (this was news even to myself).

Our pediatrician comes in and asks the same thing; I say “I don’t know. I have always been Pro-Vaccine, but now that I’m holding this little baby I’m not sure. I mean if the Covid Shot was for newborns I would deny it… even though I’ve received it.”

“Why would you deny the Covid Vaccine for him?” she asks.

“Because I know Covid doesn’t affect babies/children like it does adults and elderly. So I do not believe there would be a point.”

“Right. Well, actually all vaccines are like that. The Hepatitis B vaccine for example is only necessary if there is a risk of exposure and harm from contracting Hepatitis B. If there isn’t that risk, then we may argue that particular shot isn’t necessary.”

She then proceeds to recommend me a book called, The Vaccine Friendly Plan and suggests I go home and do my own research before making any decisions.

I thank God every single time we have an pediatrician appointment for giving me as my kids’ provider. She did not push an opinion, gave me facts & resources, and encouraged me to make a well-informed decision. I wish she could be my doctor!

The Vaccine Friendly Plan opened my eyes to a whole way of living – that way being Non-Toxic. He discusses the contaminants in our water, in plastic packaging, processed foods, toothpaste, hygiene products, laundry products, etc. (everything that was in my household) and how they negatively impact our health. He of course discusses the ingredients of each vaccine and how they can negatively interact with our bodies leading to increases in several childhood & autoimmune disorders.

I loved this book though because he is neither pro, nor anti, vaccine. Simply discusses in great detail why they were developed and who may stay benefit from each one. He also suggests alternative vaccine schedules to reduce the chance of overloading our kids’ bodies with harmful toxins.

This was the start to my non-toxic journey. I dived headfirst into swapping out our food, hygiene and cleaning products; I have continued to make swaps along the way in all the other areas of living, including birth. I had an even stronger fight in me during my second pregnancy to make DARN sure the birth was going to be unmedicated and natural (to the best of my ability).

Going non-toxic is not for the faint of heart. Its overwhelming, at times confusing, and takes quite a bit of practice. I am dedicated to this journey though as I know while it may be difficult for me, it will make it loads easier on my children should they proceed to live a lower-toxic lifestyle in their futures.
